CPM = (Cost ÷ Impressions) × 1000
Use this free CPM calculator to calculate your cost per 1,000 impressions instantly, or switch the dropdown to work backwards and find total cost or impressions instead. It works as a CPM impression calculator and a reverse calculator in one, so however you know two of the three numbers, this tool solves for the third.
What Is CPM (Cost Per 1000 Impressions)?
CPM, or cost per mille (mille is Latin for thousand), is what you pay for every 1,000 times your ad is shown, regardless of whether anyone clicks it. It is the standard metric for brand-awareness campaigns where the goal is reach and visibility rather than direct clicks or conversions.
Unlike CPC, which only makes sense once someone clicks, CPM tells you what you’re paying purely for exposure. A campaign can have an excellent CPM and still perform poorly if the audience isn’t relevant, which is why CPM is best read alongside CTR and conversion rate, not on its own.
How to Calculate CPM
To calculate CPM, divide your total ad spend by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000.
- CPM = (Cost ÷ Impressions) × 1000
CPM Formula Calculator, Step by Step
- Find your total ad spend for the campaign or placement you’re measuring
- Find the total impressions it generated over the same period
- Divide cost by impressions
- Multiply the result by 1,000
Worked Examples
- Small campaign: $20 spent, 10,000 impressions ($20 ÷ 10,000) × 1,000 = $2.00 CPM
- Mid-size campaign: $850 spent, 65,000 impressions ($850 ÷ 65,000) × 1,000 = $13.08 CPM
- Agency-scale account: $12,000 spent, 950,000 impressions ($12,000 ÷ 950,000) × 1,000 = $12.63 CPM
CPM Calculator Formula (Reverse Calculation)
Because this is a reverse-capable calculator, you can also start from a target CPM and solve for total cost or impressions instead.
- To find Total Cost: Total Cost = (CPM × Impressions) ÷ 1000
- To find Impressions: Impressions = (Total Cost ÷ CPM) × 1000
This is useful when you’re planning an awareness campaign around a fixed budget. If your platform typically runs $12 CPM and you have a $3,000 budget, you can work out roughly how many impressions to expect before the campaign launches.
What Is a Good CPM?
CPM varies enormously by platform, and even more by objective and season on the same platform. The figures below reflect that spread rather than collapsing it into one misleading average.

Why the range is wide: CPM is an auction outcome, not a price you set directly. On Meta especially, your CPM reflects how many other advertisers want the same audience, your campaign objective, your ad quality, the season (Q4 typically runs 25 to 60 percent above the annual average), and even the country you’re targeting, which can shift CPM by 5 to 9 times between markets. Compare your CPM against your specific platform, objective, and season, not a single blended number.
How to Improve Your CPM
- Refine audience targeting, overly broad audiences usually inflate CPM without improving relevance
- Cap ad frequency so the same person isn’t shown the same ad excessively, which raises costs and hurts perception
- Avoid launching new awareness campaigns in Q4 where possible, since CPMs across nearly every platform spike sharply from October through December
- Improve ad relevance and quality scores where the platform offers them, since more relevant ads are typically served more cheaply
- Test placements individually, automatic placement selection sometimes costs more than manually chosen, more relevant placements
- On Meta, compare Feed against Stories and Reels. Reels inventory is often less saturated and can run meaningfully cheaper for the same audience
